Dear GRP Insiders,
The call to action is clear in light of Maria Ressa winning this year’s Nobel Peace Prize. The Philippines' community of journalists should put a stop to this single person's personal crusade to make them all look bad.
After all, why should Maria Ressa get a medal for “fearless journalism” when there are hundreds of thousands of real Filipino journalism professionals practicing their craft and focusing on facts with quiet and consistent grace?
Journalists of the Philippines, wake up! A liar is representing you all on the world stage!
Regards,

In review and in prospect
Last week saw the astounding award of the chi chi Nobel Peace Prize to Rappler CEO Maria Ressa. The award was supposedly in recognition of her self-styled “heroic” crusade against the “tyranny” of Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte. Ressa fancied herself as some sort of Joan of Arc going up against the so-called “assault on press freedom” that Duterte, we are told, sustained against Philippine news media since he came to power in 2016.
What is even more remarkable is how the rest of the members of the Philippines’ “journalism” community simply stood back and allowed Ressa to make them all look like a bunch of chumps before the international community. Not only did Ressa lie about the Philippines being a deadly “war zone” for “journalists”, she, in effect, belittled the achievements and, more importantly, the sustained consistency of other more established, more professionally-accomplished, and more competent news media organisations.
To the rest of the world today, Maria Ressa is God’s Gift to Philippine Journalism — the Messiah all the rest of the Philippines’ hapless journalists were waiting and praying for to liberate them from “oppression”. Evidently Filipinos cannot save themselves against both real and imagined “oppression”. It takes a medal issued by a Western European committee half a planet away to validate their salvation. To the millions of Filipinos who would beg to differ, tough luck. The thumbs up of five suits appointed by the Norwegian parliament trumps all their votes.

Maria Ressa won her Nobel Peace Prize by being DISHONEST
